One killed as lorry hits motorcycle

TIRUCHI: A motorcycle rider was killed after a trailer lorry dashed against the vehicle on the Tiruchi - Thanjavur main road near the BHEL police station here late on Tuesday night. The victim was identified as Vadivelu (27).

Police sources here said two persons were coming on a motorcycle driven by Vadivelu towards Tiruchi when a trailer lorry coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with the two-wheeler killing the rider on the spot. The injured Anbu Jaganathan (24) and Rajesh (19) have been admitted to a private hospital here. The BHEL police have registered a case.

Fatal attack

A 28-year-old man, who was admitted to the Government Hospital here on Tuesday night with multiple injuries after he was allegedly attacked by one Krishnan, died on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at Alampatti Pudur near Somarasampet.

The police said that Sakthivel of Therkupallam in Thogamalai had an illicit affair with Krishnan's wife for some time. Hence, Krishnan allegedly attacked Sakthivel with a sharp weapon in front of a sawmill where the latter was working as a labourer.

The Somarasampet police have arrested Krishnan.

Prohibitory order

The Commissioner of Police Prateep V. Philip has issued an order prohibiting assemblies, meetings, processions, agitations, demonstrations etc. for a period of 15 days from 10 a.m. on November 15 to 10 a.m. on November 30 for the preservation of public peace and safety within the city, a police release issued here said.

Search for crocodile continues

Forest officials and a team of fishermen from Tiruchi continued their search for the crocodile that had strayed into a residential colony at Lalgudi for the second day on Wednesday.

The fishermen had cast strong nets in the swamp at Muthu Nagar hoping to trap the crocodile. Forest officials said a close vigil was being kept to track the movement of the crocodile.

Girl drowns

A 15-year-old girl drowned in the Aiyyan Vaikkal at Thirumanamedu near Lalgudi in the district on Monday. The matter was reported to the police on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Vaijayanthi of Thirumanamedu. The girl reportedly drowned in the channel while bathing. The Lalgudi police have registered a case.

Physics quiz

The Anna Science Centre - Planetarium here will conduct a quiz programme on physics for students of Standards IX and X on the premises on November 18. The quiz will begin at 10 a.m.

Each school can send a team of three students for the contest. The Project Director of the Centre, R. Madhavan, said the competition was being organised as part of the International Year of Physics. The teams should bring a bonafide certificate issued by the head of the respective institution, he added.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 11,587 cusecs and the outflow, 11,389 cusecs.
