BANGALORE: Pooja S. Kanade and M. Ramesh won the first prize in junior and senior category respectively at the regional finals of on-the-spot The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2005 held at Bishop Cotton Girls School here on Saturday. Pooja, a fifth standard student of MKET's L.K. English Medium School, Harihar, said she was "feeling nice." "After I heard the topic, I thought for five minutes and started painting," she said. For Ramesh, a tenth standard student of Adithya English School, R.T. Nagar, Bangalore, the result was a pleasant surprise. "Last year, I had won the consolation prize. This year too, I was expecting a prize but not the first," he said. "A rainy day" and "A traffic jam" were the topics for juniors and seniors respectively. Children used the painting material to good effect. The participants depicted children playing in the rain, people carrying umbrellas, wearing raincoats, kids playing with paper boats, submerged vehicles, fallen trees, bent electric poles etc. For many seniors, the topic "A traffic jam" appeared easy. They showed vehicles stuck in traffic jams, traffic policemen waving at motorists, drivers yelling at each other; one student also drew a picture of an ambulance stuck in a traffic jam. Judges V.R.C. Shekar and Sreenidhi Seshadri said all the children had painted well. "It was a difficult job to judge the winners. We looked at all aspects. Some are good at drawing and some in blending colours. Finally, we had to go by the creativity and the imagination of the participants," Mr. Shekar said. Suresh Jayaram, Principal of the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. He said fine arts was a technical course and painting a good career. The first prize winners received a cash prize of Rs. 1,250 each and certificates. The second prize winners were given a cash prize of Rs. 1,000 each and certificates. The third prize winners received Rs. 750 each. Those who received consolation prizes were given Rs. 200 each and certificates. N. Rajashekar, Regional General Manager of The Hindu, Bangalore welcomed and introduced the chief guest to the gathering. He said that the Young World Painting Competition had become popular among school students. Over 400 children participated in the regional finals. Children had come from Harihar, Hassan, Kanakapura, Mysore, Tumkur, and Hosur in Tamil Nadu. The other winners in the junior category were B.R. Shwetha, Sri Vani Education Centre, Rajajinagar (second prize), Anoop P. Hegde, Bangalore (third prize). The consolation prizes went to K.L. Pooja, Sughsoh S.N., Ashrith V., N. Supriya, Manasa Vinodkumar, B.U. Vinod and Partik Nandy. The other winners in the senior category were Aditya A. Kulkarni, Janaseva Vidyakendra, Channanahalli (second prize), Preethi M.
