Coop polls: TDP cries foul

Policemen acting like pawns, allege party leaders

HYDERABAD:
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has accused the Congress of making a mockery of democracy by politicising the election process to the cooperative bodies in the State.
"The Government could have nominated its candidates instead of converting the elections into a "farce," senior TDP leaders--M.V. Mysoora Reddy, S. Venugopalachari and E. Peddi Reddy--said at a press conference here on Thursday.
`Drubbing'
Indirect elections were being held to the post of chairpersons as the Congress was `afraid' of the prospect of receiving a drubbing.
Accusing the Government of committing irregularities, they charged Cooperation Minister Kanna Laxminarayana of staying the elections for at least 100 PACS for fear that the TDP would bag them. They lashed out at the Minister for reportedly saying that the elections were stayed as they could not be held smoothly, adding "there cannot be a more inefficient Government".
Complaints
The TDP leaders also alleged that the policemen were acting like "pawns" in the hands of the ruling party and not taking action on the complaints lodged by the TDP cadres.
