  • Core issue relates to sovereignty: PCG

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the People's Consultative Group (PCG) of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Wednesday that the Government was willing to discuss ``all issues'' concerning Assam.

``I am willing to listen to whatever concerns you may raise. I am willing to discuss issues bothering the people of Assam,'' Prime Minister's media adviser Sanjaya Baru quoted him as telling the 11-member PCG team which met him here. The Prime Minister said he was a ``servant of the Constitution'' and all issues had to sorted out within its framework.

"Time has come to end violence. Let us work together to bring a glorious chapter for the people of Assam,'' he said.

Arup Borbora, a member of the PCG team and its spokesman, said it was agreed at the meeting that the nearly three-decade long conflict ``could be resolved through political negotiations and peace dialogue.''

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who was present at the meeting said the Prime Minister was ``not afraid'' to discuss any issue but had to work within the framework of the Constitution. ``It is a good message to ULFA; I hope they will respond,'' he said.

The first-ever meeting between of the PCG and the Government, including National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan, lasted for more than an hour. It is learnt that during their talks, the PCG members said the core issue was sovereignty.

Mr. Borbora said they were happy with the talks. He claimed that the Government was willing to discuss all issues, including that of sovereignty. Describing the talks as ``congenial, open minded and heart-to-heart,'' he hoped that similar rounds would take place in the near future, than in the distant future.

Official sources said the next round of talks would be held with the Home Ministry but no timeframe had been fixed yet.
