Congress still afraid of Karunakaran: Murali

Special Correspondent

`Congress showing disrespect to Election Commission'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Democratic Indira Congress (DIC) (Karunakaran) president K. Muraleedharan on Thursday said that Congress president Sonia Gandhi's intervention in the Election Commission case regarding a name for his party proved that she continued to harbour fears about it as a political force.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Muraleedharan said the Oommen Congress had adopted the tactic it implemented in the organisational polls with a view to wipe off Mr. Karunakaran and his men. The Chief Minister's dream of depriving his party of a symbol and a name in the local bodies election did not materialise as the Election Commission took a timely decision.

He said that the most regretful part was that the AICC supported the move and it was as per the directions of Mrs. Gandhi that the three AICC office-bearers had sought an interview with the Election Commission to present their case against his party. He said the Congress had made a vain attempt to postpone the elections, but the combined demand of all political parties for the conduct of election and the cooperation they extended to the commission resulted in the announcement of the dates. However, Congress leaders were now attacking the State Election Commission only because he refused to toe the Government line.

He accused the Congress of showing disrespect to a constitutional body and sought to know whether the party approved such public criticism against a constitutional body. The party leadership had refused to disown a statement made by its general secretary, he added.

He said there was no basis for the allegation that the DIC and the Left were building bridges with the BJP.
