NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu on Tuesday held a meeting of chairpersons of major ports and senior Railway officials. He reviewed railway connectivity to the major ports to assess future requirements. The meeting also made an assessment of the existing traffic and infrastructure and projected growth in the coming years. Mr. Baalu called for coordination between the Railways and Port authorities for early implementation of ongoing projects and for a joint time-bound action plan to meet the target. The needs and projections made by ports were brought to the notice of Railway officials and the need to complete pending proposals in a time-bound manner was underscored. Some of the important projects discussed include doubling of line in the Panvel-Jasai section for Jawaharlal Nehru Port; Wadala-Kurla dedicated freight line for Mumbai Port; broad gauge conversion of Bindi-Samdari section for Kandla Port; completion of Hassan-Mangalore rail link and construction of bypass to serve New Mangalore Port; handling of iron ore at Wagon Tippler in Goa Port; and construction of railway link to Vallarpadam International Container Trans-shipment Terminal for the Cochin Port. On the eastern coast, the projects discussed included doubling of track between Madurai and Dindigul for Tuticorin Port; running of dedicated fixed path container trains from Tuticorin and Chennai Port to locations in North India; connectivity to the proposed iron ore and container terminals at Ennore Port on SPV model; development of a separate interchange yard at Mindi for Visakhapatnam Port; construction of heavy axle dedicated railway link from iron ore mines/steel plants to Paradip Port; and doubling of Rajgoda-Haldia stretch of Haldia-Panskura rail line for Kolkata Port Trust.
