BANGALORE: In view of the cultural and historical importance of Sanskrit, the Government will consider suggestions to create a Sanskrit directorate for the development of the language and for facilitating higher studies, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, R. Ramalinga Reddy, told the Legislative Council on Wednesday. He was responding to V.S. Acharya of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who urged the Government to give up the proposal to merge Sri Chamarajendra Sanskrit College in Bangalore with the Government Sanskrit College in Mysore.Explaining the importance of Sanskrit, Dr. Acharya and Ramachandra Gowda (BJP), L. Hanumanthaiah (Congress) and others urged the Government to retain the identity of the Bangalore college. Despite being aware of the importance of Sanskrit and the oriental system of knowledge, the Government has not established a directorate. Now, it is said to be thinking of closing down the college for want of adequate number of students. It should reconsider its decision, they pleaded.
No decision on merger
Mr. Reddy clarified that the question of merging the two colleges was discussed only as a probable solution if the department concerned sent a proposal to the effect in the light of the dwindling student strength. The Government has not decided either to merge them or to close down the Bangalore college, he said.
