MANGALORE: A relay fast by workers of the Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) General Workers' Union in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here entered the seventh day on June 6 with 15 workers being admitted in hospital. The workers are on strike demanding that the Government intervene to ensure that the MCF authorities re-appoint 152 workers who have been denied work in the loading section since August 4, 2004. They are on relay fast since May 31. The general secretary of the union, Ravindra Kenjar, gave the names of those workers who have been admitted as Raghu Nambiyar, Akbar, Premnath Shetty, U. Padma, Vitala Moolya, Yusuf, Jagadeesh Shetty, Ashok, Budde Sab, Robert D'Souza, Farooq, Kishore, Robert Ferrao, Madhav Poojary and Ronald Ferrao.
Among them Raghu Nambiyar and Jagadeesh Shetty are suffering from fever, he said. The union has alleged that the MCF authorities have "denied'' work to 154 "permanent contract'' workers of the loading section from August 4, 2004 without citing appropriate reasons. Among them, two workers have died. In their place daily wagers have been recruited. Those workers have worked with the MCF for a minimum of five years. Some of them have served for 25 years. Mr. Kenjar said the "permanent contract workers'' were getting all facilities given to permanent employees of the MCF till August, 2004. It included bonus, loan facility, uniform, pension and voluntary retirement scheme benefits.
