Kashmiri photojournalist bags 3 awards

Staff Reporter

MUMBAI: Photographers from the Kashmir Valley made their presence felt in the city on Friday at the Mumbai Press Photo Contest 2005.

Started in 2003, the contest went national this year. However, the jury decided against giving any photograph the coveted Press Photo of the Year 2005 award.

There were 2,700 entries from 125 photojournalists.

There were six categories: Spot News, General News, Daily Life, People In The News, Sports and Arts and Entertainment. Pankaj Nangia from India Today, New Delhi; Sherwin Crasto from Fotocorp/DNA, Mumbai; Neeraj Priyadarshi from The Indian Express, Mumbai; Ashish Raje from Mid-Day, Mumbai and Neeraj Priyadarshi won the first prizes (Rs. 25,000) in the abovementioned sections. Altaf Qadri of EPA, based at Srinagar, won four awards.

`Look beyond set paths'

The four-member jury consisted of senior photo journalists Pablo Bartholomew and Prashant Panjiar from New Delhi, Raghvendra Rao from Bangalore and Soumitro Ghosh from Kolkata. Raghvendra Rao emphasised the need to go beyond the events.

"There is so much scope to go beyond natural calamities. I just want them [the photographers] to look beyond the paths that have already been set... There is so much one can do in terms of saying, in terms of interpretation," he said.

Prashant Panjiar narrated his experiences at the World Press Photo and said it was time to "listen to message" of these pictures.
