Vaikom remembered

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Celebrated Malayalam litterateur Vaikom Chandrasekharan Nair, who passed away recently, had played the role of an editor in Adoor Gopalakrishnan's first film, `Swayamvaram.'

This was revealed by the filmmaker himself at a memorial meeting organised in the city on Monday. According to Mr. Gopalakrishnan, "to act as one self" on screen is the most difficult task. "But Vaikom played the role with ease," he said. "Had he continued acting, Vaikom would have become a good actor."

Recalling his association with the writer as a student studying in Pune film institute, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that Vaikom had been a constant source of encouragement for youngsters like him. "Whether it is in writing historical novels, contemporary stories, poetry, or journalistic pieces Vaikom excelled in every field he ventured into." However, the filmmaker added that had Vaikom concentrated on any particular field, the State would have known him more.

The meeting also paid tributes to Kaniyapuram Ramachandran, writer and politician, and KPAC Sulochana, well known singer and stage actress of yesteryear, who also passed away recently.

The memorial meeting was interspersed with a video presentation on the trio by V. Sasikumar.
