Lecture on "Freedom from Hunger''

NEW DELHI APRIL 11 . Bringing issues of hunger and chronic poverty into mainstream intellectual discourse, the Centre for Environment and Food Security is hosting a bi-monthly public lecture series on "Freedom from Hunger'' on Tuesday at the India International Centre here.

The lecture would be delivered by well-known economist, Utsa Patnaik on "Theorising Food Security and Poverty in the era of Economic Reforms''. The session would be chaired by the former Commerce Secretary, S.P. Shukla.

The bi-monthly lecture is part of the "Freedom from Hunger'' campaign launched by CEFS to work towards banishing hunger and poverty. Statistics reveal that millions of Indians go to bed without food while thousands die of hunger everyday.

The first bi-monthly lecture was delivered by social activist Aruna Roy.

Anti-VAT rally on April 15

NEW DELHI APRIL 11 . The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) will hold an anti-Value Added Tax traders-consumers rally at Jantar Mantar here on April 15.

Addressing a conference in the Capital today, the chairman of CAIT, Vijay Goel, charged the Delhi Government with betraying the traders and people of the city on the issue of the VAT regime. He said the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, had categorically stated that she would take the traders into confidence before implementing the new taxation policy.

Distribution of books

NEW DELHI APRIL 11. To promote the country's rich cultural heritage, the Bharatiya Brahman Jagriti Manch distributed books among children at a function in the Capital on Sunday. According to a Manch's president, Nandlal Vashisht, the organisation will also be setting up a cultural centre to promote moral and spiritual values among children.

Carnival camp

NEW DELHI APRIL 11 . A two-day carnival-cum-overnight camp was organised for students of the New State Academy Senior Secondary School in Pitampura in the Capital this past week. Besides puppetry, magic show, elephant ride and games, the students were sensitised about fire safety norms. The event culminated with the distribution of certificates and gifts to students.

"Infuse moral values in students'' NEW DELHI APRIL 11. The Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has said that educational institutions must make students strong in character and infuse moral values in them so as to assist in the task of nation-building.

Speaking at a function organised by the Jubilee Hall Students' Union of Delhi University on Sunday, Mr. Hooda recalled his association with the union. He gave away prizes to the winners of the badminton tournament and also released the annual magazine of the union on the occasion. The students presented a draft for Rs.51, 000 to the bank officer of the union for the relief and rehabilitation of the tsunami victims.
