Army XI downs TN, Punjab Police shocked

KOLKATA, APRIL 7. Tamil Nadu XI put up a spirited display against former champion Army XI but failed to stop the latter winning the group B quarterfinal league match 1-0 in the Indian Oil all-India 110th Beighton Cup hockey tournament at the CC&FC ground here on Thursday.

In the other match, Bombay XI shocked another former champion Punjab Police by an identical margin to collect full points in the same group.

In a well-contested match, the Army's matchwinner was scored by its captain and India player Ignace Tirkey following a penalty corner, the team's sixth, to seal the game.

Tamil Nadu earned four penalty corner awards but failed to even captilise on one. In an encounter marked with attacks and counter attacks, the armymen's fitness was the clinching point.

They played the game hard to keep the rival under constant pressure.

The Tamil Nadu side made a number of counter attacks but failed to break into a well-guarded Army defence.

The defeat meant, Tamil Nadu XI would have to win the next two games against Bombay XI and Punjab Police to qualify for the last four stage.

The game between Punjab Police and Bombay XI was well dominated by the former but the latter scored the lone goal through Jayesh Yadav in the 36th minute.

Punjab policemen earned as many as 12 penalty corner awards but failed to even put one between the posts.

Bombay XI, under attack from the start, relied on counters and in one such effort managed to score the winning goal. — Our Special Correspondent
