Promise on Lottery Bill

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MarCH 4. The Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman, told the Assembly today that the Government would try to bring forward the Lottery Bill during the current session of the Assembly. Replying to a submission by the Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, the Finance Minister said the matter would be placed for discussion at the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee slated for March 9 and a decision taken.

CRPF recruitment programme

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will organise a recruitment programme at its centre in Pallippuram, near here, on March 10 and 11 to select 30 drivers, of whom 18 will be from the general category, eight from `other backward communities', three from the scheduled castes, and one from the `ex-Army, general' category. An official press release today asked the candidates who want to attend the recruitment exercise to report at Pallippuram on March 10 with original certificates to prove their date of birth and educational qualifications, four passport size photos, and caste certificate.

Award for Ranjith

Thrissur March 4. The writer-director Ranjith has been selected for the Bharathan Memorial Award, instituted by the Kerala Film Audience Council.

Honour for CIFT research team

Kochi March 4. A research team from the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) has won the coveted international Smart Gear Award, in the category of `other non-target species' (including fish) from the World Wildlife Fund.

Ravindran cremated

CHENNAI MARCH. 4. The body of Malayalam music director M. Ravindran, who passed away yesterday, was cremated at Porur today. The last rites were performed this evening at an electric crematorium by his sons Sajan (also a music director), Rajan and Naveen Madhav, a singer. Lyricists S. Rameshan Nair, Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and Girish Puthencherry also paid their last respects. - PTI

Open house for subscribers

KOLLAM March 4. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), Kollam Telecom, is organising an open house on Monday for its subscribers in the district. The session will be held from 2.30 p.m. at Hotel Sudarsan auditorium.

Subscribers can make suggestions on how to improve services of the utility at the open house. Top BSNL officers from the district will be attending the meeting.

New phone

exchange

The new 5 ESS Vallikavu Telephone Exchange in Kollam district will be commissioned at 3 p.m. on March 5. Subscribers under the exchange having the STD/ISD barring facility should re-register their secret code. Assistance could be sought on 2897000 and 2863000.

Jewellery shops to reopen

Following the withdrawal of the 2 per cent tax on branded jewellery imposed in the Union Budget, the All-Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants' Association has announced calling off the three-day-old closure of jewellery shops in the State in protest against the tax. In a statement here the district unit president of the association, S. Abdul Nasser, said that jewellery shop owners in the State welcomed the decision and the shops would remain open from Saturday.

Award for journalist

Thrissur March 4. K.R. Prahladan, staff reporter with the Thrissur bureau of Mathrubhoomi, has been selected for the Puzhankara Balanarayanan Memorial Media Award. The award has been given for his feature Durithakkayangalil Madamma Thoppu, published in the daily from May 28 to 31.

He will be presented the award at a function here on March 9, says a press release.

Swami Pranavamrithananda Puri, head of the Thrissur and Palakkad units of the Mata Amrithanandamayi Math, will be given a public reception at the Kausthubham Auditorium here on March 6. Hearing aids will be distributed to students of Amritha Speech and Hearing Improvement School on the occasion.
