Scientists claim breakthrough in use of artificial joints

GULBARGA, FEB. 24. The Centre for Advanced Studies in Fluid Mechanics in Bangalore University, which is sponsored by the University Grants Commission, has achieved a major breakthrough in the use of nano and smart material-based artificial joints in the human body. The centre has also been successful in overcoming the shortcomings in the use of artificial joints.

Rudraiah, a mathematician and the head of the centre, is responsible for achieving the breakthrough by synthesising a smart material using purely conducting materials for the effective functioning of artificial synovial joints.

Mr. Rudraiah is also the head of the National Research Institute for Applied Mathematics in Bangalore.

Side effects

Delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the three-day international conference on "Advances in Applied Mathematics" at Bhaskara Hall, Gulbarga University, here on Thursday, Mr. Rudraiah said that one of the major challenges for scientists and engineers working in the biomedical field is the side effects of artificial joints, causing a drastic fall in the haemoglobin levels of patients.

New theory

However, a team of scientists headed by him have propounded a new theory that uses nano-smart materials to overcome these side effects.

Scientists in the U.S. and Japan were also in the advanced stages of finding a permanent solution to problems pertaining to the use of artificial joints in the human body.

He said that scientists at the centre were also working on use of various nano and small materials for the replacement of various organs and body parts.

Studies

Mr. Rudraiah said that the centre has conducted several studies in fluid mechanics and is on the verge of coming out with a new smart material using paddy husk as its basic material.

"Paddy husk is an ideal source material for smart materials and all it needs is proper compression."

Inauguration

The Director of the Centre for Excellence in Mechanics, University Cluz, Romania, Ioan Pop, inaugurated the conference.

The Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, V.B. Coutinho, presided over the function. Several distinguished professors, scientists, and engineers from various universities and research institutes from India and abroad are participating in the conference.

Grigori M. Sisoev, a professor from Lomonosov Moscow State University; Alexander Vasiliev from the Nuclear Safety Institute, Moscow; I. Chin Liu of National Chi Nan University, Taiwan; and Jeong-Hoon Kim of Yansei University, Seoul, Korea, were present on the occasion.

More than 75 papers will be presented at the conference.
