Wooden articles stolen
Tuticorin Feb.13. The police are on the lookout for Rechi for allegedly stealing wooden articles worth Rs.1,30,000 from a house at Kulathoor recently. According to the police, a case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Ramaswamy at the Kulathoor police station on Saturday.
Man injured
Tuticorin Feb.13. A 41-year-old-man was injured after Murugan had allegedly attacked him at Satankulam on Saturday night. The police said Murugan stopped Subaih's bike in front of the Pannamparai post office and attacked him with a knife, owing to enmity.
Dies of burns
Tuticorin Feb.13. Sathammal (40), who was admitted to the Government Hospital here with serious burns a few days ago, died on Saturday. The police said she suffered the burns in an accidental fire at her house at Malamanthai Colony near here.
Fire in school
Tuticorin Feb.13. A fire broke at a teachers training school situated at Bhoopalrayarpuram near here this morning caused an estimated damage of Rs.50,000. The reason for the fire was yet to be ascertained. The north police have registered a case.
Two stake claim to bodies
CUDDALORE FEB. 13 . A piquant situation has arisen in which two persons claim kinship to a boy killed in the December 26, 2004 tsunami at Parangipettai near here. The decomposed body was found at Annankoil near Parangipettai two days after the tragedy and buried there without its identity being established. Rajendran of Pudukuppam and Jagadeswaran of Annankoil, an employee of the Parangipettai lighthouse, lodged a complaint with the police that their sons Vignesh and Rajesh were missing ever since the tragedy. Having learnt that the body of a boy was buried at Annankoil, both staked a claim. Authorities had taken a photograph of the body. On the insistence of both, authorities arranged for the exhumation of the body on Saturday evening, in the presence of the Tahsildar, Gnanavel, and the Inspector of Police, Sundararajan. The officials would send the skull and long limb to the forensic laboratory in Chennai. The report is likely to be ready in a week. The payment of the compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the kin of the boy has been withheld.
Amritanandamayi visit
NAGAPATTINAM FEB. 13 . Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, chief of the Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt, today visited several tsunami-hit areas in Nagapattinam and interacted with the families of the affected fishermen. Mata Amritanandamayi Devi was given a rousing reception when she arrived at Pattinamcherry on the outskirts of Nagore. She also visited Samandampettai, Nambiyar Nagar and Pattinacherry. A spokesman said the Mutt decided to build 1,300 permanent houses for fishermen in the district. It built temporary shelters to accommodate 100 families at Sambandanpettai. The Mutt recently launched a livelihood rehabilitation scheme for fishermen and a pension scheme, `Amrita Nidhi', for widows. It planned to form self-help groups among men and provide them with engine-fitted fibreglass boats and fishing nets. The catches would be equally divided among the members. Women would be trained in vocational skills.
Irregularities in sub-jails
VIRUDHUNAGAR FEB. 13 . Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption uncovered irregularities in the sub-jails at Sattur and Srivilliputtur during surprise checks they conducted today. The Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police, S. Prabhakaran, who led the check at Srivilliputtur, told The Hindu that ration items were found in excess, and the stock distribution register was not properly maintained. Besides, jail authorities lodged more prisoners than the permitted number. The authorities kept two attempt-to-murder case remand prisoners at the sub-jail in violation of the jail manual. Mr. Prabhakaran said a simultaneous inspection in the Sattur sub-jail revealed certain irregularities in stock maintenance. The shortcomings would be informed to the DVAC chief and the prison authorities.
Tribal couple set free
ERODE FEB. 13 . A tribal couple has been rescued from bondage on a farm in Bhavani on Saturday. On information that some landlords engaged bonded labourers for their land, the Gobichettipalayam Sub-Collector, C. Samayamurthy, along with revenue officials and the police, conducted surprise raids on farms in the area. They rescued Sidhan (29) and his wife Chellammal (25), native of Eeratty in the Burgur forests. Sidhan borrowed Rs. 28,000 from a landlord. Unable to repay, he had to work as a bonded labourer for the past three months. His wife was working there for the past eight months. The couple were granted compensation and sent to their village with police escort. A case has been registered against the landowner under the Bonded Labour Act.
Run over by train
METTUR FEB. 13 . A Village Administrative Officer was run over by a goods train at an unmanned level crossing at Karikalthittu near here today. The police said Ganesan (47), who travelled in a two-wheeler, attempted to cross the level crossing when the incident occurred.
Bodies found
TIRUCHI FEB. 13. The bodies of four persons, including three minor girls, were found on the rail track near Uthamarkoil here this evening. The identity was yet to be established. Among the deceased was a woman. A Government Railway Police officer said the bodies were mutilated. The cause could be established only after the bodies were identified. Further investigation was on.
Swamy calls on Acharya
VELLORE FEB.13. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, and the party State president, Chandralekha, called on the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, at the Sankara Mutt at Kalavai today and sought his blessings. The Sankaracharya, who was arrested in the Sankararaman murder case and the Radhakrishnan assault case, has been staying at Kalavai ever since he was released on bail on January 11. Talking to newspersons later, Dr. Swamy said the release of both the Sankaracharyas on bail only proved that the cases against them did not have any basis.
Seized
ERODE FEB. 13 . Under the instructions of the Gobichettipalayam Sub-Collector C. Samayamurthy, the Gobichettipalayam Tahsildar, S. Smile, and revenue officials conducted vehicle checks on Saturday on the Pariyur Main Road. They seized four bullock carts with sand quarried from River Bhavani.
Arrested
Dharmapuri Feb. 13 . The Dharmapuri All Women Police Station arrested one person on charges of demanding dowry, at Oddapatti near here on Saturday. According to the police, Saravana Bhavan (36), a lecturer with the Government Arts College here used to harass his wife, Karpagam (30), for more dowry.
