PONDICHERRY, FEB. 10. The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) will welcome the idea of a third front against the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to reporters here today, the DPI leader, Thol. Tirumavalavan, said: "We will give a red carpet welcome to the third front if it is formed." Noting that the DPI was not with any political front, he said the party was preparing for the next Assembly elections. The party would mobilise all Dalit forces in the country to press for the abolition of reserved constituencies and introduction of double voting system. A conference with this objective would be held in Bangalore on April 14. The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deva Gowda, was expected to inaugurate the conference. Similar conferences would be held in Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad. On behalf of the Tamil Protection movement, the party would organise rallies from Chennai, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam. The rallies would start from these places on March 22 and culminate in Tiruchi on March 26. The meeting aimed at propagating the need to protect Tamil language, he said. Earlier, the DPI leader met the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, and invited him for the rally. He urged the Chief Minister to give a compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs to the family of a youth who died in police custody in Karaikal.
