THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB.10. If you thought the presence of women officers would make police stations safe for women, you are mistaken. That need not necessarily be the case if one is to go by the harrowing experience of Sarojini, who was picked up by the Balussery police in Kozhikode district on a charge of theft. Sarojini was made to remove her clothes, beaten up and physically abused by a male constable. She was admitted to the Perambra health centre the following day with injuries sustained in the beating. The shocking experience of Sarojini was brought to the notice of the Kerala Assembly today by the CPI(M) legislator, T. P. Ramakrishnan, and the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, who also holds charge of Home, conceded that what he had stated was true. Replying to Mr. Ramakrishnan's submission on the issue, the Chief Minister admitted that the police personnel had not observed the `decency' expected of them when effecting arrests. A head constable has been suspended in connection with the incident and disciplinary action recommended against the woman sub-inspector in charge of the station, Mr. Chandy said.
