Delegation to meet Manmohan

BANGALORE FEB. 10. An all-party delegation will meet the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, here on Friday and raise various State-related issues, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said on Thursday. He was addressing presspersons after visiting Mallya Hospital to enquire after Srinidhi, Circle Inspector of Kudremukh, who was injured in the recent encounter with naxalites. Mr. Dharam Singh said the delegation will seek classical language status for Kannada and raise problems in the irrigation sector and those of coffee growers. About Mr. Srinidhi, Mr. Dharam Singh said: "He is recovering well." To the allegation by members of Citizens' Initiative for Peace that the police officer was not injured, the Chief Minister said: "Let they come and see his condition. I will not say anything more on the issue."

Water rate hike opposed

BANGALORE FEB. 10. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has opposed the increase in water tariff announced by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and decided to stage a protest in front of the BWSSB's office on February 14. The BWSSB has increased the tariff without augmenting water supply to the city, Prakash K., Secretary, Bangalore District Committee of the CPI(M), said in a press release. The State unit of the Janata Dal (United) has also opposed the increase in water rates.

Farmer commits suicide

SIRSI Feb. 10. Shankrayya Chennabasayya Hiremath (5), a farmer at Karaginakoppa in Mundgod taluk in Uttara Kannada district, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself on Wednesday night. It is said he had taken loans from banks in Mundgod. A case has been registered.

Tax refund cases pending

Bangalore Feb. 10. The Income Tax Department has said it is unable to process about 1,100 refund cases of the assessment year 2003-04 under salary ranges 13, 14 and 15 of Bangalore on account of invalid or wrong PAN quoted by assessees and some of them not quoting PAN. The details of these cases are on the website, www.incometaxbangalore.org. The assessees have been asked to view the website and furnish their PAN to the assessing officers so that the returns can be processed and refund vouchers despatched.

Re-elected K.L.E. Society chief

Belgaum Feb. 10. Prabhakar B. Kore, winner of the Giants International and Karnataka Rajyotsava awards, was unanimously elected chairman of the K.L.E. Society here on Thursday. This is his fifth consecutive victory. Ashok Bagewadi was elected vice-chairman, for the fifth time.

Panel to study D.Ed. syllabus

BANGALORE FEB. 10. The State Government has instructed the Directorate of State Education, Research and Training (DSERT) to constitute an expert committee to restructure the syllabus of the D.Ed. course and go into the six-month internship issue. In an order, the Government has asked the expert committee to also examine the need to increase the number of working days and hours. The committee is to submit its report within a month.

`Paper mill not polluting Kali'

Bangalore Feb. 10. West Coast Paper Mills Ltd., Dandeli, has disowned any responsibility for the pollution of the Kali river. On Wednesday, the noted environmentalist and Chipko Movement leader Sundarlal Bahuguna alleged here that the paper mill is releasing untreated effluents into the river, and the water was turning poisonous. The executive director of the mills, K.L. Chandak, said: "The company is discharging treated effluent into the Kali river, which meets all the norms prescribed under the environmental laws and is neither toxic nor poisonous. The company has established a sophisticated effluent treatment plant, which is in continuous operation."

`Counter naxals through the Gandhian way'

SHIMOGA Feb. 10. Kagodu Thimmappa, former Minister, said here on Wednesday that the people's problems could not be solved through the gun culture. Mr. Thimmappa was reacting to the killing of two naxalites in an encounter near Koppa in Chikmagalur district on Sunday.

He told newspersons that it was only through the Gandhian way that the social problem confronting the people could be solved. He suggested that the problem should be solved through negotiations. He did not approve of the deployment of the STF to handle the naxalite problem.

BANGALORE FEB. 10. The Karnataka Mahila Hindi Seva Samithi, Chamarajpet, Bangalore 18 has announced the dates for the Hindi lower and Higher examinations. The Hindi higher examination will be held on February 12 and the lower examination on February 13.

Applications invited

MYSORE Feb. 10. The Visvesvaraya Industrial Trade Centre has invited applications from exporters.

According to a statement from the Hebbal Industrialists' Association (HIA), awards will be given to medium and large industries, small-scale industries, and women and SC/ST entrepreneurs.

Awards will also be given in the State and district categories for agricultural and processed food products, including coffee, readymade garments including silk, information technology (IT) and biotechnology, engineering goods and machine tools, electronics and communication, arts and crafts, mineral and mineral-based products, besides leather items, gems and jewellery.

Demonstration

Udupi Feb. 10. The Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti staged a demonstration in front of the District Women and Children Hospital here on Thursday demanding that gynaecologists be appointed to the hospital.

In a memorandum submitted to the District Surgeon, U.M. Vaidya, the General Secretary of the Samiti, Nityananda Volakadu, said the hospital was the only refuge of the poor people who could not afford treatment at private nursing homes. But there were no gynaecologists here. This had forced nurses to attend to medical cases resulting in problems. Pregnant women who were admitted to the hospital were put to hardship, the memorandum added.

Dr. Vaidya promised the protestors that gynaecologists would be appointed immediately.

Awareness

MANGALORE FEB. 10. Samagama, an organisation dedicated to the cause of religious awareness, satsang and culture, will organise Samagama 2005 at Padil Padavu in Kuppe Padavu near here on Saturday. The Dharmadarshi of Sri Kshetra Balyottu, Vikyathananda Swamiji, will attend the religious awareness and satsang programme.

The seer of Sri Revanna Siddeshwara Mutt, Dharwad, Basavaraja Devaru, will deliver religious discourse. The manager of Shanti Prakashana, Mangalore, Mohammad Kunhi, and the President of Kuppepadavu Gram Panchayat, Hiranyaksha Kotian, will be the chief guests.

Murdered

BELLARY Feb. 10. A youth was murdered by unidentified persons in Indira Nagar locality on Wednesday night at around 11.15 p.m.

The deceased has been identified as Mahantesh (27) and his body had multiple injuries, the police said.

The Cowl Bazaar police have registered a case.

Training

Bidar Feb. 10. Canara Bank will provide financial help to women inmates of the district jail if they want to take up self-employment schemes after their release, senior manager, H Hanumanthappa, said on Tuesday.

He was speaking after inaugurating a weeklong training programme for inmates in knitting, embroidery and other vocational skills.

The bank, which sponsored the programme, supplied materials like wool, thread and needles free of cost to the trainees.

Experts from Samaj Seva Samiti, a non-governmental organisation, trained the inmates.

Festival

Bidar Feb. 10. The annual Jatra Mahotsav of the ancient Parshwanath Jain Mandir in Kamthana in Bidar taluk will be held on February 13.

Devotees from neighbouring States will participate in the three-day festival, which includes rituals such as abhishekha, chadhav, and a religious procession.

The temple has a statue that was carved in the 11th Century. It was found in an anthill by Shruta Sagara Muni in 1987, said a release from Vijay Kumar Jain, secretary of the Jain Milan.

Installation

Bidar Feb. 10. Sri Shivananda Devaru will be formally installed as the head of Chidri Hiremath in Bidar taluk on February 18.

The heads of all Pancha Peetha mutts, and followers from the State, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra will participate in the celebrations.

A religious procession will be held from Basaveshwar temple in Gandhi Gunj to the mutt on February 17, said a release.

Man dead

Bidar Feb. 10. A man died when he accidentally fell into an open well in Hallikhed (B) in Humnabad taluk on Tuesday.

Passers-by noticed the body of Kanteppa Channappa (40) of Dakulagi floating in the well and informed the police.

A case has been registered.

Two arrested

Raichur Feb.10. The Raichur police arrested Jambanna and Mounesh and seized explosive materials, including ammonium powder, from them while they were transporting it in a tractor, near Huvinahedgi village of Deodurga taluk on Wednesday.

The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.

The Deodurga police have registered a case.

Exhibition

MANGALORE Feb. 10. Surabhi, Kerala State Handicrafts Apex Cooperative Society, will hold an exhibition of Kerala handicrafts from Friday.

According to the manager of exhibitions, Surabhi, Abdul Khadder, the society, which was started in 1964, markets arts and crafts created by over 30,000 artisans of 103 primary cooperative societies in Kerala.
