BELGAUM, FEB. 10. There was tension around Ramdurg Town police station following the death of Erbasaiah Mahalingaiah M. (60) in the police station. The Superintendent of Police, Hemant Nimbalkar, who rushed to the town along with the Deputy Commissioner, M. Maheshwar Rao, in the light of a protest organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party, placed the Sub-Inspector, V.B. Yadwad, under suspension today. The Ramdurg Town Police have registered a case against Mr. Yadwad and others on the basis of a complaint from Erbasaiah's brother. However, the Additional Superintendent of Police, S.K. Hegde, told The Hindu that the case will be handed over to the Corps of Detectives. He said Erbasaiah died in the police station. The cause of death can be ascertained only after the post-mortem report is available. Post-mortem on the body was conducted and the body handed over to Erbasaiah's relatives, he added. Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Mahadevappa Yadwad, MLA, and Suresh C. Angadi, MP, staged protests against alleged police atrocities. They demanded action against Mr. Yadwad and others who, they alleged, were responsible for Erabasaiah's death.
