HYDERABAD, FEB. 6. The Telugu version of free software for desktop computers will be released in Hyderabad on February 9 by the father of the free software movement, Richard Stallman. Speaking to The Hindu , Y. Kiranchandra, All India Work Group Member of the Free Software Foundation of India, said that the package titled `Swecha' or free, will contain Telugu versions of a word processor, spreadsheet, web browser, email application, video and music player, calculator, Internet games and multi-media application among various other applications. This would be the first release of a Telugu version of the Gnome Linux desktop package for computer users, he said. "The advantage with free software is that every user has the freedom to change, modify, adapt and develop the software in ways which are useful for him," he explained. This gives people control over the software they use and remove them from dependence on proprietary software, which is expensive and often not tailored for the needs of the common user.
User-friendly
Mr. Kiranchandra said that the Free Software Foundation would request the largest number of people to use this software and suggest changes and modifications, which could make it more user-friendly.
