Water supply to be restored

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 2. The Federation of Residents Associations Thiruvananthapuram (Frat) has urged the authorities to take immediate steps to restore the water supply that had been disrupted in some parts of the city. In a statement here today, the Frat president, Vennikulam George Varghese, and the general secretary, Pattom Sasidharan Nair, said the authorities should intervene to address the problem that had been recurring due to the digging of the roads by various agencies for laying cables and pipes.

Medicines provided

Spectacles, other aids and medicines were provided to the physically challenged and the needy by the Maharani Setu Parvathi Bayi Charitable Society to mark the 22nd death anniversary of Sethu Parvathi Bayi. The patron of the society, Karthika Tirunal Lakshmi Bayi, distributed the spectacles and other aids at a function organised on the premises of the Kowdiar palace. The president of the society, K. Ayappan Pillai, presided over the function.

Plea to rectify liquor policy

The Chairman of the Madya Virudha Samithi of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference and the Auxiliary Bishop of Trivandrum, Joshua Mar Ignathios, has urged the Government to rectify the liquor policy. The announcement of the Minister for Excise and Finance, Vakkom B. Purushothaman, in the Assembly to open more bars in the State is a challenge to those fighting against the flow of liquor in the State, he said in a statement.

Amount sanctioned

A sum of Rs.8 lakhs has been sanctioned from P.K. Vasudevan Nair, MP's fund for installing a 120 HP pump in the pump house of the Karichal-Poovar drinking water project in Neyyattinkara taluk, according to an official press release here.

Agitation

The Narmada Bachao Andolan leader, Medha Patkar, has announced that the agitation being carried in Mangalapuram in the district by the Pratikarna Vedi would be taken over by her in view of the health and environment problems and shortage of drinking water following the clay mining in the locality. A release from the vedi president, M.A. Latheef, said Ms.Patkar would soon visit the affected areas.
