THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 2. The City police have sought the custody of the 32-year-old woman who is suspected to have stolen gold ornaments from the house of the former Election Commissioner, M.S. Joseph, after drugging his wife. According to the police, Nazeema came to the household of Mr. Joseph as a home nurse on January 26 under the false name of Shiny. On January 28, Nazeema was reported missing. Some gold ornaments owned by Ms. Leelama Joseph were found to be stolen. Ms. Joseph was admitted to a private hospital in an un-conscious state. Nazeema was arrested by the Malappuram district police from Pirappanangadi on Tuesday. The policemen identified her when she appeared in a cheating case at the local magistrate court. The city police suspect that Ms. Joseph was given an ayurvedic coffee-based concoction laced with a pharmaceutical drug containing diazepam. The remnants of the concoction have been sent for examination to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory and the Chief Chemical Examiner's laboratory. The police are yet to receive the examination reports. The Malappuram police have found a purchase receipt issued by a medical shop in Kozhikode in Nazeema's bag. The receipt was for the purchase of the drug `Restyil.' The city police suspect that the accused would have used more than 20 powdered capsules of `Restyil' to drug Ms. Joseph. An official said that Nazeema was being investigated in connection with similar thefts in Kollam, Thrissur and Kozhikode districts. Nazeema has also been charged with the theft of gold ornaments from the house of one Davies at Peramangalam in Thrissur in October, 2004. The suspect had "infiltrated" the household of Davis as a home nurse using the fictitious name of Shyla. Claiming to know an ayurvedic cure for common ailments, she had made coffee-based concoction to drug the family members. Nearly 8 sovereigns of gold were stolen from the house, the police said. At a house in Mayyanadu in Kollam district, the accused had allegedly used the name of Seenat. To a home nurse placement agency in East Fort, the suspect had stated that her name was Shiny. The police said that Nazeema's mother and two children are staying at Thirumukku, in Sasthamkottai, in Kollam district. The police are probing into her antecedents, an official said.
