Kudroli temple celebrations conclude

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, JAN. 17.JAN. 17.JAN. The Brahmakalashotsava celebrations of the Gokarnatha Temple at Kudroli here ended here on Monday with the Sahasrakalashabhisheka and Maha Anna Santharpana.

The Brahmakalashotsava celebrations coincided with the 150th birth anniversary of the reformer saint Narayana Guru who gave the backward community of Billavas their own religious identity in 1911 when he consecrated Gokarnanatha in Mangalore after being persuaded by the leader of Billavas, Sahukar Koragappa, who was pained by the ill treatment of his people at the hands of the upper castes.

Relief team for Indonesia

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, JAN. 17.JAN. 17.JAN. A team comprising eight doctors of various specialties left here on Sunday for Bunda Aceh in Indonesia to provide relief for tsunami victims there, according to a press release.

The team is being led by Ausuf Ahsan K.P, Assistant Professor, College of Dental Surgery, Manipal. The team went to Indonesia following a request from the Red Crescent organisation in Indonesia. It will work there for three weeks.

`Human chain'

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, JAN. 17.JAN. 17.JAN. Students of Diploma in Education (D.Ed) (earlier TCH) at various government teachers' training institutes in the city formed a "human chain" at Hampankatta Circle here on Monday to protest against a Government Order which directs such students to undergo six month's free internship at government schools in rural areas.

About 300 students from seven government institutes in the city gathered at the circle under the banner of district unit of All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO). They shouted slogans against the government for ordering them to undergo internship without any remuneration. A rally would be held here on Tuesday in protest against the Government Order, said Vimal Kumar, convenor, D.Ed Students' Action Committee. He said D.Ed students in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi were on an indefinite strike in this connection.

Stolen

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, JAN. 17.JAN. 17.JAN. Shivaprasad of Kuntikana here has complained to the Pandeshwar Police stating that his motorcycle parked near Canara College was stolen on Sunday.

Pandeshwar Police have transferred the case to Barke Police Station for investigation.
