TIRUCHI, JAN. 7. The responsibility on the part of the Highways Department, motorists, pedestrians, vehicle builders, display banner board erectors and road users at large was emphasised by G.R.K. Raju, Chief Workshop Manager, GOC, while delivering a lecture on `Road Safety Awareness', on Wednesday. Dwelling at length on shortcomings of Indian roads and human approaches, Mr. Raju said accidents could be prevented by strict adherence to the various Motor Vehicle Act regulations. He highlighted the theme through video clippings depicting the road safety measures followed by developed and developing nations. Exhorting road users to take pride in obeying various Road Safety rules, he said the statutory authorities should deal with the erring public initially through counselling and subsequently by imposing strict penalty. M. Ramalingam and M. Prabhakar, Senior Road Vehicle Inspectors, explained the errors committed by drivers while overtaking, and crossing unmanned level crossings. Driving vehicles shorn of maintenance, and obtaining licences without training led to serious consequences. M.A. Inbarasu, Deputy CME, emphasised the need for wearing helmets while driving two wheelers. Two-wheeler accidents claimed the lives of people in the productive age group, he said, and pointed out that a fatigued person could commit a serious mistake owing to carelessness even for a fraction of a second.
