Election Commission summons Haryana officials

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 6. The Election Commission has directed the Chief Secretary of Haryana to instruct senior officials of the Public Works and Irrigation Departments to appear in person before the Commission to explain the violation of the model code of conduct by issuing tenders for various projects.

The Commission said it was brought to its notice that two tender notices were issued by the State Government — one by the Public Works Department and the other by the Irrigation Department — for undertaking construction works in Hissar and Sirsa. The tenders were to be opened on January 25 and 27. The estimated expenditure on the projects had been shown to be Rs. 133.66 lakhs and Rs. 157.15 lakhs respectively.

The Commission said it had called for the explanation of the Secretaries and after considering their explanation, it was directed that the tenders not be opened as long as the model code of conduct was in force.

As the explanations given by the Secretaries were not found to be satisfactory, the Commission today directed the Chief Secretary to instruct the Secretaries, the Chief Engineers and the Executive Engineers, who signed the advertisements, to appear before the Commission.
