Ensure quality of repair works

Sir, — The Mangalore City Corporation has started repair and construction of drains and culverts in many parts of the city. Similar works are being carried out at Kaprigudda (KMC Hostel) and Silva Road. But the cement is not being mixed according to specifications.

Due to the poor quality of work, many drains, culverts and footpaths collapse within a year of construction. It is a waste of taxpayers' money to take up such inferior quality works repeatedly. Also, there is no one to supervise these works. The corporation should make sure that the quality of such works is maintained.

Infrastructure in rural areas

Sir, — Roads in Belgaum district are in very bad condition. The condition of the road from the Maharashtra border to Kagwad suggests that there is no Public Works Department in Karnataka. You know that you have entered Karnataka when you feel the potholes on the road.

Roads are an important component of measuring development along with infrastructure, electricity and education. There is no power in these areas for more than 12 hours a day. Education is neglected and even Kannada-medium schools are not aided by the Government.

If Karnataka wants to ensure development of the rural areas, the Government must improve the infrastructure in these border areas.

Provide parking facility

Sir, — It is unfortunate that in public buildings such as the Kendriya Sadan, the Reserve Bank of India and other places, the public are not allowed to park their vehicles on the premises. The entire parking area is used up by the staff and no proper parking facilities are provided to the public. The authorities are requested to ensure that sufficient parking space is provided for vehicles in public places.

Irreplaceable loss

Sir, — M.S. Subbulakshmi was a musician of international repute. The void created by her passing away cannot be filled by anybody. Her divine voice will linger on till the end of the "Kaliyuga." When people hear the devotion and dedication in her songs, they feel closer to the Lord.

Veda Srinivasan,

Banagalore.
