`Bestow awards on deserving artistes'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, DEC. 16. Mridangam maestro and founder of Sruthi Laya Kendra, Karaikudi R. Mani, today underlined the need for music sabhas to bestow awards on artistes worthy of the honour.

Addressing the launch of the 17th winter music festival of the Kendra here today, he said cultural organisations had the responsibility to identify artistes who were talented and deserved the awards.

Unlike many of the Sabhas, Sruthi Laya Kendra selected artistes for its awards through a draw of lots, he added.

At the function, the Kendra's Guru Surajananda award was presented to mridangam vidwan, Madurai T. Srinivasan, while the Gowri Manohari award instituted by Naganatha Sivan, a priest of a temple in London, was presented to Carnatic singers the Bombay Sisters, C. Saroja and C. Lalitha.

Presenting the awards, L. Sabaretnam, Director, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, commended the Kendra and Mr. Mani for promoting music and carrying forward the tradition of `Guru-Shishya parampara' respectively.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Srinivasan thanked the Kendra and hailed Mr. Mani for his initiatives, which have brought mridangam to the centre stage. Ms. Saroja said an artiste honouring another artiste was very gratifying. The sisters, she added, were grateful to their parents, guru and other family members for extending all support and cooperation to them.

The Kendra also presented the C.V.K. Endowment award to P. Kirupakaran and the Nathan Endowment award to D.A. Srinivas.
