Railway platform

Railway platform

Sir, — The Punthottam Railway Station in Tiruvarur district attracts a lot of tourists but only two ordinary sleeper berths are allotted. The length of the platform is inadequate as bogies go beyond its limit causing boarding and alighting by aged and ailing passengers difficult.

I request the railway authorities to allot more berths and extend the length of the platform.

S.Vijayagopalan,

Tiruvarur.

CT scan

Sir, — The Kumbakonam Government Hospital receives maximum number of patients with neurological problems but it hospital has only one CT scan unit.

Patients with neurological or brain related problems such as tumour and epilepsy have to wait for a long time.

It will be helpful if the authorities install one more CT scan unit. Will the Health Department look into the issue?

R.Jaysankar,

Kumbakonam.

Service tax

Sir,— Does the Government levy service tax from those providing service or from those availing it — the common man?

The consumers already pay for the service. Most of the service providers including the Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) collect the tax from the common man.

Is this fair?

Do the lawmakers intend to collect the service tax from the common man leaving the businessmen, who earn thorough this business, go scot-free?

The Government should rectify this unfair trade practice.

R. J. B. Frederic,

Thanjavur.

Bus service

Sir, — Trains have been cancelled in view of gauge conversion work for the past three months.

We do not know when the work will be completed and train services will be resumed.

Thousands of people visit Vailanganni and Nagore throughout the year.

For those coming from Kerala, Karnataka and southern Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur are important transit points.

Many buses bound for Thanjavur from Vailanganni or Nagapattinam or for Vailanganni from Thanjavur are crowded with pilgrims.

So, residents of Tiruvarur or any other town in between Nagapattinam and Thanjavur suffer a lot.

I request the transport authorities to ply more buses on the Thanjavur-Nagapattinam route.

M.D.Jaffar Hussain,

Thanjavur.

Drainage scheme

Sir, — As more and more areas are being covered by underground drainage scheme in Tiruchi, the corporation should come out with dos and don'ts for maintenance of the scheme from user side.

The experience of the erstwhile beneficiaries in old municipal wards points to practical difficulties due to lack of user awareness for well over 10 years.

Provision of gully traps at the outlet points to road mains from commercial complexes, apartments and hospitals should be made mandatory to prevent the chocking of underground mains on roads.

Otherwise, plastic papers and silt block the mains affecting the nearby buildings.

Even half an hour rain results in back flow. Construction of manholes (none in Thillainagar) on roads and frequent clearing of silt from manholes would prevent the back flow.

A.V Narayanan,

Tiruchi.

Bad road

Sir, — In response to umpteen number of appeals for repairing the Oil Mill Road near the Ex-servicemen Colony, the corporation has started repairing and relaying the road. The road should be maintained and nobody should be permitted to spoil the road.

H.Ghouse Baig.

Tiruchi.

Tiruvarur.
