Kamukara award for Vani Jayaram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 12. Noted playback singer Vani Jayaram has been selected for this year's Kamukara award. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.25,000, a citation and a statuette designed by artist Bhattathiri.

The president of the Kamukara Foundation, D.Chandrasenan Nair, the general convener, A.S. Suresh Babu, and the jury chairman, Sreekumaran Thampy, told presspersons here today that Vani Jayaram had been chosen for the award in view of her contributions to South Indian film music, spanning 33 years. They said Vani Jayaram's melodious voice had enabled her to carve a niche for herself in 14 languages, including Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil. She has over 8,000 film songs to her credit.

The award will be given away by the renowned singer S.P. Balasubramiam at a function here on December 5. The winners of the State-level music contest, organised by the Kamukara Foundation, will be honoured at the function. The jury members, S.Saraswathy Amma and V.K. Naryanan, were also present.
