Swaralaya award for Hariharan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 25. Ghazal singer Hariharan has been selected for this year's Swaralaya-Kairali-Jesudas Award. The playback singer, Santha P. Nair, has been selected for the special jury award. The jury chairman, V. Ramachandran, told presspersons here today that Hariharan has been a live presence for the past 25 years in the Indian music scenario.

After making a debut rendering Hindustani and Carnatic compositions, he made remarkable contributions to popularise ghazals and film music. Hariharan had exploited the potential of Western music too, the jury chairman said. Santha P. Nair, who started her musical career in 1953, had sung under the baton of many prominent music directors. The Jesudas award comprises Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a statuette. The special jury award comprises Rs. 50,000, a statuette and a citation. The awards will be presented on January 4.
