Veerappan's wife Muthulakshmi in agony after seeing his body. AP
METTUR, OCT. 19. Tension prevailed at the burial ground at Moolakkadu near Mettur in Salem district tonight, where the body of the sandalwood brigand, Veerappan, was taken for cremation. When police wanted to cremate the body, Veerappan's wife, Muthulakshmi, objected to it saying that the body must be placed in the house of Veerappan's brother, Madheyan, here. But police refused to do so. The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam founder leader, `Kolathur' Mani, and his lawyer, Chandrasekaran, arrived at the burial ground and supported Ms. Muthulakshmi. Mr. Madheyan, who was released on parole from the Coimbatore Central Prison, also arrived and demanded that the right of performing the last rites be vested with Veerappan's wife and relatives. Hence the cremation was being delayed.
