TIRUNELVELI, OCT.18. The Tirunelveli region of Co-optex covering Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts, has set a sales target of Rs.5.50 crores for the Deepavali season. Inaugurating `Deepavali - 2004' discount sale at Gandhimathi Co-optex Showroom at Tirunelveli Junction today, the Collector, Atul Anand, said the seven showrooms in the district two in Tirunelveli, one each at Palayamkottai, Ambasamudhram, Kallidaikurichi, Tenkasi and Valliyoor transacted business for Rs.2.47 crores in the last financial year. During `Deepavali - 2003', the showrooms collectively netted a sale of Rs.1.45 crores and this target had been put at Rs.2.02 crores for `Deepavali - 2004' in the district, he said. The Gandhimathi Co-optex Showroom, the only outlet with `Star Status' in Tirunelveli region, had business worth Rs.93.99 lakhs during the last fiscal and the target set for the current fiscal year is Rs.1.34 crore, including the `Deepavali 2004' target of Rs.76 lakhs, the Collector said. The Regional Manager, Co-optex, G. Shanmugasundaram, said showrooms were ready to cater to the needs of the people from southern districts as they had received fresh stocks for Rs.4 crores. "We've got stocks of Kovai cotton, Kora silk, Tusser silk-mixed sarees, Cotton zari sarees, Kancheepuram silk sarees, Arni silk sarees, printed bed sheets, furnishing materials, pillow covers, dhotis, polyester suitings and shirtings," Mr. Shanmugasundaram said. The Government had announced 20 per cent rebate for cotton and silk varieties while certain select varieties would get 20 to 50 discount. Since credit facilities were being extended to government employees, people working in public sector enterprises, banks, schools, colleges etc. the purchase of handloom products in the Tirunelveli region would certainly surpass its target, Mr. Shanmugasundaram said. The principal of Rani Anna College for Women, P. Janaki, received the first sale from the Collector.
