Congress bags 13 seats in byelections; 7 for BJP

NEW DELHI, OCT. 16. The Congress today posted wins in 13 Assembly constituencies and wrested the Bidar Lok Sabha seat from the BJP, which bagged seven seats, byelections for which were held on Wednesday. The SP-RLD combine got a shot in the arm in Uttar Pradesh, romping home in eight Assembly seats.

In the Madhepura Lok Sabha bypoll in Bihar, the RJD's Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav trounced his nearest JD (U) rival, R.P. Yadav, by a margin of over two lakh votes.

The ruling Left Front made a clean sweep of all the three seats in West Bengal. And in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, romped home from the prestigious Pahalgam seat to enter the Assembly after 17 years. Besides Pahalgam, the ruling People's Democratic Party won in Batamaloo.

The strength of the Congress in the Lok Sabha has now gone up to 146 in the 543-seat House. The RJD's strength has gone up to 22.

Counting for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha and Karchchna Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh was stopped following complaints of booth-capturing and rigging.
