BANGALORE, OCT. 9. Two boys working on daily wages were rescued from an ice-cream shop here today by volunteers of Childline (1098). The boys from Hassan district were working at the ice-cream parlour in 5th Block, Rajajinagar, for the past four months during which they were reportedly abused physically and threatened several times. "If we did not make Rs. 100 a hour, the owner would beat us up and threaten to cut off our limbs," Kumar, one of the rescued boys, said. Kumar and Santosh said they used to report at 6.30 a.m. every day. They would begin by cleaning the counters and the floors. By 10 a.m., the owner would leave them to manage the shop. Kumar and Santosh were expected to call him every hour and report on the business. "He was always suspecting us. He used to think that we were stealing the money," Kumar said. The boys also said that they were not paid by the owner. Kumar said that when they asked for money, the owner told them that it would be sent to their homes in Hassan. But it was never sent.
Help sought
Finally, the boys called Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota (BOSCO), a coordinating centre of Childline, and asked to be rescued. Childline is a 24-hour emergency outreach service for children in need of care and protection. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is the nodal centre for Childline in Bangalore. The coordinating agencies are the Association for Promoting Social Action, Makkala Sahaya Vani, and BOSCO.
