CUDDALORE, OCT. 3. The Department of Agriculture has requested farmers to register the details of crops raised by them in the `adangal' (records) with the Village Administrative Officers so they could avail crop insurance and get compensation whenever there is loss owing to natural calamity. Farmers in the rain-fed areas would have to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 30 for entering the details in the adangal, according to a statement issued here.
Villages identified
For the samba season, nine villages each in the two Panchayat Unions in Vriddhachalam taluk had been identified for calculating the average yield of a particular crop. Villages identified in the Vriddhachalam Panchayat Union: Komangalam, Narumanam, Sitherikuppam, Thoravarur, Alinduraipattu, Rajendrapattinam, Vayalur, Kavanai and Vilankattur. Villages identified in the Kammapuram Panchayat Union: Perundurai, Sakkaramangalam, Vilakkapadi, Peruvarappur, Devankudi, Periyakappankulam, Mudanai, Siruvarappur and Kotteri. The average yield from these villages was the base for calculating the crop loss or total damage. This exercise was being carried out every year at various points, and the data being furnished to the statistics and agriculture departments, nationalised and cooperative banks for assessing the damage and formulating policies. According to the statement, in case of partial or total damage, a high-level committee would ascertain the gravity of the problem by comparing the crop position in the sample villages. Waiver or rescheduling of crop loans would be possible only when the nature of crops was registered.
