NEW DELHI, SEPT. 9. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Babulal Gaur, today said that while he had ``no assurances'' from the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership on continuing in the post till the next elections, he was brought in ``to do good work'' and he was confident that he could deliver. ``There are no assurances given in politics,'' he said in response to questions from the press on continuing as Chief Minister till the next Assembly elections four years away. However, he had been brought in to replace Uma Bharti, who had resigned after a non-bailable warrant was issued against her (she has been discharged in the case since then), and was expected ``to do good work.'' He added: ``And I will do good work.'' When asked whether the possibility of Ms. Bharti's return hung over his head like a sword, he abruptly ended the press conference. ``Thank you, thank you,'' he said and got up from the chair. He was asked whether Ms. Bharti would function as a ``super chief minister,'' given her popular mandate. His response: she would function as a ``national leader,'' while he would focus on the State.
Meets Manmohan
It was Mr. Gaur's first visit here since he became Chief Minister 15 days ago. He paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and asked for special help for his State. Mr. Gaur also met the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, to ask for completion of pending projects. Later, he met the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and other party leaders.
