Time for nostalgia at SV University College

By Our Staff Reporter

A.V.S. Reddy, Secretary, Union Ministry for Tribal Affairs, unveiling the bust of Lt. K. Balarama Reddy at the alumni reunion in Tirupati on Monday.

TIRUPATI, AUG. 30. The old students of Sri Venkateswara University College turned nostalgic at the alumni reunion organised on the campus on Monday as part of the golden jubilee celebrations, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, P. Murali.

A.V.S. Reddy, Secretary, Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, unveiled a bust of Lt. K. Balarama Reddy, an alumnus, who was killed in the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Mr. Reddy gave a call to students to join the Armed Forces.

Laying stress on accountability at all levels, Mr.Reddy launched a fierce attack on the Parliament, the executive and judiciary for being insensitive even to burning issues. He flayed the Parliament's nonchalant attitude and the bureaucrats' ignorance of vital issues. The IAS officer also wanted an ombudsman setup in place for monitoring the performance of judiciary, on the lines of the ones for banking and insurance sectors.

Caution sounded

He also cautioned the students that future generations were in for trouble if the falling human values and dwindling natural resources continued to be neglected.

P.R. Naidu, the former V-C of S.K.University, Anantapur, recalled the services of Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu and S.P.B.K. Pattabhirama Rao, the then Education Minister for their efforts to establish the varsity. He also suggested to the varsity to pay a fitting tribute to luminaries like Koka Subba Rao, S. Govindarajulu and Manavala Ramanujan -the first chancellor, vice-chancellor and principal respectively, by naming a building or instituting an endowment lecture in their honour.

MLA leaves in a huff

Triggering a mild commotion, the Tirupati MLA, M. Venkataramana, left the venue in a huff, even as the traditional lamp was being lit to declare the function open. Though not an alumnus, the MLA was invited as a dignitary at the function as could be seen from the invitation. However, as the organisers did not offer him a seat on the dais, the piqued legislator, walked out of the auditorium.
