BANGALORE, AUG. 25. The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) on Wednesday conducted a satellite-linked counselling for MBA seats on the Amrita Institute of Technology campus here on Wednesday. About 500 students selected seats in the counselling process, held simultaneously at the institute and the VTU campus in Belgaum. The Vice-Chancellor, K. Balaveera Reddy, monitored the process in the city, while the Registrar, M.S. Shivakumar, supervised it in Belgaum. The two centres were connected through a 512-kbps satellite link on the INSAT 3E platform provided by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). "The link works on a private secure network. No one can get access to the network as it is not connected through the Internet," said Pradeep, a technician of the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Application Centre of the Information Technology Department, the implementing agency. Through videoconferencing, the VTU officials interacted regularly to ensure that the rank-wise seat-selection process went as planned. "A second rank holder in Belgaum can select a seat only after the first rank holder based at the Bangalore centre selects his seat," Mr. Pradeep said. The university had set up a waiting hall, where the real-time availability of MBA seats was displayed on a huge screen, a pre-counselling hall and a counselling hall for the process. There are 2,308 government-quota seats for selection in 92 colleges offering MBA courses on a 50:50 seat-sharing formula. The seat-selection process will be conducted till August 29 for Government-quota seats and on August 30 and 31 for the management-quota seats in 20 colleges which have opted to fill their seats through the VTU's common admission test. According to the schedule, those ranked 501 to 1,200 can select the available seats on August 26 (they should get their documents verified a day earlier); 1,201 to 2,000 on August 27; 2,001 to 4,000 on August 28; and 4,000 till the last rank on August 29. The MBA aspirants have to submit demand drafts for Rs. 45,000 at the time of seat selection. Any additional fee, if necessary, after a final fee structure is announced, can be paid after a seat is blocked, the Vice-Chancellor told The Hindu .
