MANGALORE, AUG. 11. Four or five armed people attacked the policemen escorting Rohi, alias Vamanjoor Rohi, to the District Sub-Jail here late on Tuesday, according to the police. Rohi, undergoing life imprisonment for his involvement in a murder case, was being brought to the sub-jail by a few Mysore City Armed Reserve constables for his appearance in a case pending against him at the District and Sessions Court. According to complaint lodged by the head constable Naga Naik with the Mangalore East (Kadri) Police, he, along with the constables Shiva Kumar and Surendra, were escorting Rohi from the Mysore Central Jail to the sub-jail for the court appearance scheduled for Wednesday. They alighted from a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus near PVS junction and were walking to the sub-jail, 100 metres away, when the culprits, who came in a car, dashed against them. The culprits then reportedly attacked the policemen with sharp weapons, inflicting severe injuries on them. Rohi too suffered injuries. The group fled in the car, when the policemen raised an alarm. Mr. Surendra had to be operated upon. The others are recovering in the hospital. The Additional Superintendent of Police, B.S. Lokesh Kumar, rushed to the spot on receipt of the information. Mr. Kumar told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the police had enough leads in the case. Asked if it was a bid to either free or kill Rohi, Mr. Kumar said it was too early to state anything. Rohi has been convicted of murdering the owner of a club at Kaikamba near Vamanjoor junction.
