By Our Staff Correspondent
MADIKERI, AUG. 7. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced four new buses on the Madikeri-Mumbai route. K.G. Bopaiah, Madikeri MLA, who inaugurated a function to mark the induction of the buses into the KSRTC fleet, said the State Government had promised that the transport service would be improved all over the State, particularly in rural areas. R.M. Devarajayya, manager of the KSRTC Madikeri depot, said the new buses would replace the old ones plying on the route. They would have many facilities such as comfortable seating arrangements and hydraulic doors, he said.
Schedule
Mr. Devarajayya said a bus would leave Madikeri at 9 a.m. and reach Mumbai the next day at 12.30 p.m. On the return journey, it would leave Mumbai at 11 a.m. and reach Madikeri the next day at 2.30 p.m. The current fare of Rs. 450 for a ticket had been retained though additional facilities were being provided, he said. There were 90 buses operating from the Madikeri depot, including five buses hired on contract.
Relief
Noting that the KSRTC had introduced an insurance scheme for those who died in accidents while travelling in its buses, he said the relief amount had been increased to Rs. 2 lakhs a person from Rs. 1 lakh with effect from August 1. Accordingly, there had been an increase of Re. 1 in the amount being collected from the commuters who purchased tickets exceeding Rs. 100. The additional funds would go towards the relief corpus. Mr. Devarajayya said the Mangalore Division of the KSRTC, which includes the Madikeri Depot, had given 189 passes to the physically challenged, 57 to the visually challenged, 31 to freedom fighters, and 18,104 to students.
Revenue
He said that the revenue collection came down during the monsoon. It would, however, improve in winter and from February to May. The fares too would be increased during the peak season, he said. The Deputy Commissioner, Srikant Valagad, and the Superintendent of Police, Devajyoti Ray, were present.
