Governor `objected' to induction
By Javed M Ansari
NEW DELHI,
JULY 16.
The induction of the controversial Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya into the Uttar Pradesh Government earlier in the day was not without hiccups. According to information available with The Hindu , the new Governor of the State, T.V. Rajeshwar, reportedly objected to the Chief Minister's recommendation and sent back the file.
Mr. Raghuraj Pratap Singh has spent nearly two years in prison and was charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act ( POTA) by the Mayawati Government. The Allahabad High Court has only released him on bail and his case is still pending before the POTA review committee.
Mr. Rajeshwar, who recently took over from Vishnu Kant Shastri as the Governor, reportedly asked the Chief Minister to carefully examine whether it would be appropriate to give a ministerial berth to somebody who had been charged under POTA. The Chief Minister is reported to have argued that Mr. Singh was a victim of a political vendetta and that the Mayawati Government framed him.
He also reportedly argued that if people with cases pending against them could become members of the Central Government why was a special case being made out against Mr. Raja Bhaiyya.
