Congress objections referred to Returning Officer
By Vinay Kumar
NEW DELHI,
JUNE 22.
The Election Commission today requested the Returning Officer to reconsider the nomination papers of the two Congress candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. A fresh scrutiny of their rejected nomination papers will now take place on Thursday, June 24.
The full Commission meeting, presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishnamurthy, considered the objections submitted by the Congress delegation and requested the Returning Officer to give hearing to the two Congress nominees Harendra Agarwal and M.M. Shukla as well as other candidates at 11 a.m. on Thursday. "It is for the Returning Officer to consider all relevant matters with due and deliberate care and pass such appropriate order in his quasi-judicial capacity as he may deem fit," the Commission, which has limited power in the matter, said in its communication.
The Commission yesterday stayed the Rajya Sabha results from Uttar Pradesh after the Congress complained that the nominations of its two candidates were rejected "unconstitutionally and unlawfully." The party had alleged that the Returning Officer was "biased" and was acting under pressure from the Samajwadi Party-led State Government.
