AHMEDABAD, JUNE 19. The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, today assured "full support and cooperation other than financial support" to set up an IIM in the North-East as proposed by the Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh. The chairman of the IIM-A Board of Governors, N.R. Narayana Murthy, said here today that laws of the IIM-A Society, one of the founders of the institution, did not permit financial support to any other institution. Refuting the reports in a section of the press from New Delhi, he said he was "flabbergasted" at the question put up by some mediapersons whether the IIM-A was ready to support weaker IIMs, particularly the one proposed by the Minister for the North-East region. He claimed that he had been "misquoted" in the press. "It is a great idea to have an IIM in the North-East to help students of that region. The IIM-A will be extremely happy to extend all support and cooperation, including faculty exchange and students exchange, to the new IIM," he said. The IIM-A director, Bakul Dholakia, said the institution had supported new IIMs with the exchange of faculty members. "We had sent our faculty members from here to Kozhikode and Indore," he said. Mr. Narayana Murthy announced the IIM-A's plans to launch a one-year post-graduate programme for executives from April 2006. The course would be meant for executives having seven to 10 years of work experience and have between 40 and 70 students. The IIM-A also proposed to set up a Centre for the Management of Health Services on the existing campus from the new academic year. It would offer three management courses in health services, including hospital services, insurance and hospital infrastructure.
