Development projects planned in Perumbavoor

PERUMBAVOOR, JUNE 16 . The Perumbavoor municipal corporation is taking up several development projects, including a vegetable market-cum-shopping complex, open-air theatre, cultural and information centre, private bus stand-cum-shopping centre, etc.

The bus stand-cum-shopping complex project is estimated to cost Rs. 2.25 crores. The project is being set up to mark the Golden Jubilee of the municipality celebrated last year, according to N.C. Mohanan, Municipal Chairman.

The vegetable-cum-shopping complex, estimated to cost Rs. 3.8 crores, is envisaged to modify the present vegetable market and add new facilities. The tender for the project would be approved soon, Mr. Mohan said. A grant to the tune of Rs.1.5 crores under the Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns has been sanctioned for the scheme. Of this, an amount of Rs.75 lakhs has already been received. The remaining would be loan from the Kerala Urban Development Corporation.

The KNG Memorial Cultural and Information Centre, costing Rs.15 lakhs, has already been completed. This project is set up in memory of the late K.N.G. Kartha, a former chairman of the municipal body. The centre has a reference cell, a home theatre, cultural and information centre, IT wing, film projector, etc.

The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose open-air theatre is yet another project being undertaken by the municipal body. Estimated to cost Rs.15 lakhs, the project is nearing completion, according to Mr. Mohanan. The theatre is meant to perpetuate the memory of Netaji who had addressed a meeting at the same venue.

Under the drought relief scheme, the municipal body received Rs.11.25 lakhs, which was used to augment the water supply in areas like Iringol and Pattal where drinking water scarcity was felt during summer, he said.
