Partly cloudy

CHENNAI JUNE 3. The sky will be partly cloudy on Friday with possibility of a shower or thundershower in some areas.

On Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27.5 while Meenambakkam recorded 37.6 and 27.1 degrees Celsius.

Humidity at both places was 70 per cent.

Power cut

Power supply will be suspended from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday in Perungalathur, Tambaram (West), Panjetty, Koyambedu market, Pantheon Road, San Thome, Velachery, MMDA Colony, Padi, Sowcarpet and Ambattur areas.

Book bank

The Rotary Club of Madras Esplanade, under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Madras Charitable Trust, has set up a Rotary Book Bank to lend books to students studying in engineering colleges/polytechnics situated in the city suburbs.

The books can be retained for the academic year and returned at the end of the year.

Membership applications are invited from students studying in the second year.

Selection will be made on the basis of merit and economic criteria of candidates.

Installed

The UTI Bank has installed its 87th off-site networked ATM in the city at the office of the Director-General of Police primarily to cater for the needs of government employees.

I.K. Govind, DGP, inaugurated the facility. C.P. Rangarajan, senior vice-president of the bank, was present.

Awarded

The 29th all-India RAPA award for television commercials was awarded to Ideopraxist advertising agency in Chennai for its commercial for Pothys' Shubha Mangala silk collections.

B. Chandra Sekhar, chief executive of the agency, received the award at a function held in Mumbai.

Eye camp

The Frontline Sight Savers Trust and the Frontline Group of Hospitals conducted an eye camp for poor patients.

In all, 68 patients attended the camp.

While 14 patients were selected for cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant, one was chosen for laser treatment for retinal and glaucoma problems and 13 patients were given spectacles.

The camp was sponsored by Nagarathar Sangam of North America.

Health camp

Body Focus, an organisation with a mission to eradicate obesity, is holding a free health camp for residents of Adyar and neighbouring areas on Sunday.

The camp supervised by leading doctors will be held from 7.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. at No. 5, First Main Road, Kasthurba Nagar, Adyar, Chennai-20.

The aim of the organisation is to educate people on the serious effects of obesity, endocrine and metabolic disorders through the camp.

Opened

Sparkles, a Montessori school, has opened at T. Nagar for children in pre-kindergarten to first standard.

Admissions are in the 2-6 age group.

Students learn language, mathematics, social behaviour activities, coordination and concentration through Montessori materials.
