Zimbabwe's Ambassador to India, Jonathan Wutawunashe, writes: "The article "Mugabe's gambit ends in stalemate" (May 17), which you reproduced from a British newspaper, shows how some people just can't handle good news from a self-determining African country. "The real story the writer was finding it so difficult to tell is that Zimbabwe has weathered years of malicious bashing from bad people who hate President Mugabe for taking Zimbabwe beyond mere political liberation to economic emancipation through the land reform programme. That programme has reversed the racist colonial land regime that gave the lion's share of the productive land of an African country to invading Europeans. Enemies of a free Zimbabwe tried their best to oust a democratically elected President through sponsored violence and economic subversion. They have failed. "Zimbabwe's resilient people are working for success, and have faced the challenges that confront a relatively newly-independent country including challenges to its sovereignty with resolve and creativity. Our economy is recovering from spirited assaults from certain quarters, and there are plenty of good stories to tell."
