Probe Bhiwani poll irregularities, EC told

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, MAY 11. The Congress today called upon the Election Commission to probe alleged "irregularities'' in the conduct of election in the Bhiwani Lok Sabha constituency at the "behest'' of the ruling Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in Haryana.

In a statement, the party spokesman, Krishan Murti Hooda, a former Haryana Minister, alleged that names of thousands of eligible voters, including Congress workers, had been "deleted'' from the voters' list depriving them of their legitimate right to exercise their franchise. He further charged that this had been done by the INLD Government as part of a "conspiracy'' to ensure that the Congress did not win from this prestigious constituency.

Mr.Hooda further alleged that the ruling party had made all-out efforts to indulge in booth-capturing in all the 10 constituencies in the State as "defeat was staring it in the face''. He criticised attempts by Ajay Singh Chautala, INLD candidate from Bhiwani and son of the Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, to allegedly resort to "muscle power'' in the Dadri Assembly segment. He also alleged that close associates of Mr.Ajay Singh beat up one Dharampal Sangwan, a former MLA, when he objected to "bogus voting'' taking place at a booth in Dadri.

Alleging political highhandedness, Mr.Hooda said it was ironic that the police had registered cases against Mr.Sangwan but had "spared'' Mr.Chautala.

He expressed confidence that the Congress under the leadership of the former Chief Minister and president of the Haryana unit of the Party, Bhajan Lal, would win all the 10 Lok Sabha seats in the State and the INLD regime would fall of its own accord soon after the verdict on May 13.
