Stampede deaths have not dented image: Vajpayee

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, APRIL 14. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, today dismissed suggestions that the death of 22 persons in a stampede in Lucknow during the distribution of saris on the birthday of the Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Lalji Tandon, had affected his image. After garlanding a statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in front of the Vidhana Soudha here, Mr. Vajpayee told mediapersons: "There is nothing wrong in distributing saris. Saris are distributed during every birthday of Mr. Tandon. Something bad happened this time and it was unfortunate. It is a great tragedy; we are mourning it, but elections cannot wait."

Mr. Vajpayee said the Government would abide by the Supreme Court order in the Best Bakery case. The Court had ordered reinvestigation of the case and retrial of the case <149>in Maharashtra.

To another question, he said he was opposed to personal attacks during election campaigns, and asked the leaders of all political parties to take the campaign to a higher level.
