THALASSERY, APRIL 5. All the five accused in the murder case of the Congress worker, Kunhoonj alias Devasya, near Alakkode were served life sentences by the Additional District and Sessions Court Fast Track I here today. The judge, Sundara Govind, found the accused, all CPI(M) workers, guilty in the case of the murder of the Congress worker at Peringala under the Alakkode police station limits here in 1997. The convicted are S.M. Prasad, his father, Shivan, V.P. Haridasan, E. Gangadharan, and Mohanan, all from Peringala. They were handed down life sentences under IPC Section 302 and a fine of Rs. 1,000 each (murder). They were also awarded five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1,000 each under Section 326 (causing grievous injury by dangerous weapons), one-year simple imprisonment under Section 324 (causing hurt by weapons) and one to six months simple imprisonment under various sections. The accused would undergo these punishments concurrently. In case of default to pay the fines, the accused should undergo one month's additional imprisonment each.
