WARANGAL, FEB. 27. The first convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), formerly the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, will be held on March 1, said the NIT director, D K Tripathy, here today. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Tripathy and G Radhakrishnama Charyulu, the incharge registrar, said that more that 350 students would receive degrees at the convocation. Former director general of the CSIR and noted academic, S K Joshi, will attend as chief guest at the function, while over 100 scientists and academics from all over the country are expected to take part in the first convocation. According Mr. Tripathy, the World Bank has sanctioned Rs 5.2 crores for the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) as the NIT, Warangal ranked at the top. The funds were meant for upgradation of infrastructure on the campus. Each of the seven selected departments were granted Rs 3.5 lakhs for upgradation of laboratories besides setting up a centralised computer centre with 300 systems and Internet facility. Every faculty member would be provided with a personal computer and Internet connectivity, a modern telephone exchange with provision of Direct Inward Dialling (DID) system imported from Korea would be in place soon. A central research facility worth Rs 7 crores would also come up on the campus. Mr. Tripathy said the institute was selected to participate in the technical partnership programme with the technical institution of United Kingdom under the British Council and Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) programme.
